Southbend - Engineered to Perform, Built to Last

My Sincere Thanks to Everyone

Dear Employees, Customers, Suppliers & Reps...

                                                   ...Thank You!

It is with mixed feeling that I announce today my departure from Southbend.  At the same time, I am proud to announce John Perruccio as the new President of this great organization.

For the past 5 years, I have dedicated my heart and soul to this company.  I came to Southbend already knowing that it was one of the best brands in the market, but that had undergone a number of challenges and needed to be revived to take back its historical place in our industry.

I am proud of the accomplishments that we have attained:

  • Our quality has continued to improve and today, we produce the best quality equipment in our product category.
  • Our lead times and deliveries are second to none in our industry.
  • Our state of the art Training Center is one of the best.
  • Our shop efficiency and capabilities have continued to excel and it’s poised to improve with continued sales growth.
  • www.MySouthbendnc.com and www.BuildMyRange.com are two websites that pushed the envelope for our competitors.

I could list more accomplishment, but above all, the accomplishment I am most proud of is to put in place a vibrant inside Management Team as well as a Sales Team that understands the customer and is determined to grow the company.

2010 is already shaping up to be a great year for Southbend and I am proud to have been part of the initiatives that will insure continued progress at Southbend.

John Perruccio is the best prepared individual to take the reigns at Southbend in many years.  I am confident of his capabilities and ability to take the company to next level.

I am grateful to all of our employees for the support they gave me in the past 5 years.  I am thankful to our customers for believing in the brand and for their loyalty.  I am indebted to our suppliers who partnered with us during tougher times and less than tough ones.  Last, but not least, my thanks to all of our Reps who represented us fiercely in a market where only the best could have done what we all did.  All of you were my best source of learning and I will carry your teachings with me for the rest of my life.  My sincere thanks to each and every one of you for everything you did for me.

My next assigned responsibility is with The Star Group of companies.  With brands like Star, Holman, Lang, Wells, Bloomfield and Toastmaster, this is another jewel in the portfolio of Middleby companies.  I am excited about the opportunity and look forward to continue to create value in this great industry of ours.

Best Regards,

Nestor Ibrahim

2009 Company Picnic

Dear Valued Employees, Family and Friends...

                                                   ...Thank You!

I want to thank each and every one of you who attended the company picnic.  We had a record attendance and record fun.  It was great to see you all in an environment of relaxation and enjoyment.  For the few that did not have the chance to attend, we hope to see you at the Christmas Party.

These types of activities rank very high in priority for me because it gives us the chance to know each other outside of the pressures of the day-to-day work in the shop and at the office.  It also removes the employer/employee and the superior/subordinate relationship to give way to the true friendship we all want to enjoy.  Seeing you with spouses, your children and grand children was indeed, priceless.

The country, and actually the world, is going through a tough economic situation and of course this has had its impact on Southbend.  Luckily we are part of a larger entity: The Middleby Corporation, which has insured our stability and continued aggressiveness in the market.  The silver lining of these tough times is that they serve to differentiate good companies from great ones.  As they say: Survival of the Fittest.  Luckily, we have been working for the past 5 years to improve the fit our company and today we can be assured that we will come out of this recession as a better organization.

In spite of a tough year, we continue to invest in Southbend.  In the past few weeks, we have installed a brand new, state of the art Amada punch cell.  Rob Taylorers continues to pursue the acquisition of more capital equipment from our sister company, Wells Manufacturing.  At the same time, we invested in strengthening our Sales Team by bringing Jim Baxter back from the National Accounts Team.  We hired Andrea Mouawad as Director of Sales in the North East and Don Smith as Director of Sales for the West Coast.  With these steps, we now have the most powerful Sales Team the company has had in many years.

We have also formed the Quality Control Department consisting of Phillip Knott, Nick Dennis and Diego Pena.  You are all familiar with all three of them.  With over 30 years total experience at Southbend, I count on this team to take the quality of our products to the next level and allow us to penetrate high end markets and attain better customer satisfaction.  I ask that you all pitch in and take your own personal work to a higher level.  We will ask you to adapt to the changes that the Quality Team will need from you.  In short, I ask that you invest in yourself just like the company is investing in you.

As we move forward we will continue to introduce new initiatives.  Maintenance of our capital equipment and employee training will take center stage.  We will continue to look for initiatives to improve the working environment in the shop as well as in the office.  Our Management Team: Andy Showerman, Brad Willis, Chris Krupp, Dianne Heath, John Perruccio, Phillip Knott, Rob Taylor and Scott Miller will continue to look for ways to improve our working environment in the shop as well as in the office.  Rob Taylor recently launched a program to incentivize you for ideas you may submit to improve the company and/or the product.

We will continue to listen to you, to our Reps and to stay close to the customer.

As always, I am available to every one of you.  Those that have tried me in the past know that I am always willing to listen and address your concerns with utmost confidence.  Feel free to walk in my office every time I am there or call me on my cell phone (561.809.2331) any time of the day, any day of the week.

         Sincerely,

         Nestor Ibrahim / President

From the Shop Floor

Greetings!

I’d like to invite any and all comments to our new blog page, especially those which I can use to help shape our activity inside the plant, in order to improve the quality and efficiency of our products and services.  This is a tremendous opportunity to “close the loop” faster than ever on feedback so that we can shape our activity to better reflect what the customer and the market requires.

When I was going through the Engineering dept. at N.C. State in the early ‘90s – wow, it doesn’t seem that long ago until I stare at it on the page – the internet was in its infancy.  Folks didn’t use, much less depend on the web for 2-way communication.  You basically opened a web browser, searched for whatever you were looking for, found it if you were lucky (the information superhighway was only a 2 lane country road back then), then went on about your business.

Today the internet permeates most of the activities in our daily lives.  We depend on it to present us with valuable information rather than us simply turning to the web to answer a question or two.  We now have the ability to use the internet as a catalyst to improve communication, enable product and process improvements, and ensure our longevity as a company.  That’s why I invite feedback about our products or experiences you’ve had while working with Southbend.

       Thanks!

Southbend Blog - The Beginning of a New Era!

 Welcome Everyone!

Many of us have worked in this industry for more than a quarter of a century and have experienced the slow acceptance of new technologies.  The Combi Oven for example, has been widely accepted in Europe for decades and until only recently has it received attention in the United States.  As well, the Rotisserie Ovens were marketed successfully in Europe and in the Middle East for many years before achieving favor in the US market.  Additionally, technology used in the development of Smart Kitchens, available for some time, is experiencing only gradual adoption.

The foodservice industry’s slow evolution has regularly been the subject of discussion; nevertheless, the industry continues to struggle with the adoption of new technologies.  These challenges can be overcome by changes in business strategy, which need to be developed and implemented by the industry’s visionaries.

The leaders in today’s industry need to embrace technology, realizing the increased potential for innovation.  The establishment of college degrees in foodservice provides for the development of new leaders and is a good first step.  The development of programs offering a Masters of Foodservice Equipment degree, or a Doctorate of Foodservice Equipment and Design degree may be necessary to attract the creative talent needed for propelling the foodservice industry into the new era of using technology to improve business products and customer relationships.

Southbend has recognized the need to actively participate in the acceleration of change.  Our focus on improving product education and service skills is exampled with the construction of a 1500(sf), state of the art Training Center.  In the first year alone, the center facilitated the training of more than 200 dealers, representatives, consultants, service technicians, and internal staff.

We are taking additional steps to gain ground on the technology front with the development of information portals.  Changes to the company web site,
www.southbendnc.com, have proven beneficial with increasing efficiency in our business processes by providing visitors with routinely needed information.  Information sharing is the key to a successful business and selection of the appropriate technology medium is crucial for ensuring the sharing process is not only beneficial to the company, but beneficial to the customer as well.

Web-Logging, better known as “Blogging”, is an effective way to share information in today’s world, regardless of the industry.  Why blogging and how do we intend to use it?  Blogging is easy and offers opportunity for improving the dialogue with customers, suppliers, as well as with our employees.  A blog is a window into Southbend for our industry partners and for other interested parties.

Southbend has a Blog!  We invite all of you to post comments and help us with facilitating the necessary changes in our industry.  The commentary section will allow everyone to feedback on all postings, including this one!  We look forward to an open and beneficial dialogue with you and count on your participation, as well look forward to reviewing comments and ideas from all spectrums of the industry!  A number of blogs authored by our employees will be posted shortly.

We are very proud of the progress that Southbend has achieved in the last few years.  Improvements in quality and innovation, the speed of our service, the relationships we’ve built with our customers, and the ease of doing business with us, will continue to be the focus of our company.

       Sincerely,

       Nestor Ibrahim / President
